Detroit At Work Career Centers
SERCO, a SER Metro-Detroit subsidiary, provides career services and case management for job seekers at two Detroit at Work Career Centers, which collectively served over 7,600 residents during the 2024-2025 program year.
The two centers operated by SERCO include:
- Northwest Activities Center (18100 Meyers Rd) – Co-operated with Goodwill Industries, this location offers a neighborhood-based approach, providing not only career services but also access to after-school programs, basic needs assistance, and financial services through partnerships with over a dozen community agencies.
- Southwest Detroit Career Center (9301 Michigan Ave) – Operated solely by SERCO, this center delivers a full range of career services and specialized programs including ReBuild Detroit, YouthBuild and the SER Youth Career Center, tailored to meet the diverse needs of Detroit’s jobseekers.
Together, these centers are central to Detroit’s reimagined workforce system, offering personalized support, training, and employment pathways to help residents achieve long-term career success.

The Detroit at Work Career Centers at both 9301 Michigan Avenue and 18100 Meyers Road operate during the following hours:
- Monday to Wednesday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Thursday: 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM (extended evening hours)
- Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Meet Kim Hurtt-Jones: A Story of Strength and Second Chances
Kim Hurtt-Jones is a powerful example of resilience and determination. Just a few years ago, she was living in a temporary shelter, unsure of what the future held. But she never gave up on her dream of working in healthcare and helping others.
With support from Detroit at Work, Kim enrolled in a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program through Karing Hands Healthcare. Balancing her studies with the challenges of unstable housing wasn’t easy, but Kim stayed focused and determined. Her hard work paid off when she graduated with top marks and quickly secured a CNA position with Promedica Employment Services.
“Being able to care for people, make them smile, and be there when they need it most — that’s what keeps me going,” Kim says.
Today, Kim is thriving in her career, providing compassionate care and living with purpose. Her journey from hardship to hope is a reminder that with the right support and a strong will, anything is possible.
“Every day, I wake up grateful for this chance. If I can do it, anyone can,” she says with a smile.

Sacha
Sacha and her career coach began working together in December 2024. At the time, she was a mother of five, without a high school diploma, and believed that housekeeping jobs in hotels were the only work she’d ever be qualified for. But that belief began to shift the moment they connected.
Together, they focused on improving her academic skills so she could qualify for one of our Occupational Training programs—specifically, Patient Care Technician. But Sacha didn’t stop there. She went on to earn her GED and her certifications as both a Patient Care Technician and a Phlebotomist.
And her journey is far from over. Sacha has been accepted to Wayne County Community College and plans to enroll in the Nursing Program this fall.
Throughout her time in the program, she often recalled hearing, “You are a product of your environment.” Her Career Coach reminded her that she has the power to change that narrative—not just for herself, but for her children. And she’s done exactly that.
Sacha’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when someone believes in themselves and has the right support behind them.

Zahria Lewis: A Story of Resilience and Growth
In 2024, Ms. Zahria Lewis came to us seeking help with reinstating her driver’s license. A series of unpaid parking tickets had created a major barrier, limiting her ability to secure stable employment. Our team referred her to Street Court, where she successfully had her tickets dismissed and her license reinstated.
With this obstacle removed, Ms. Lewis was hired through a Temporary Work Experience (TWE) opportunity with Detroit at Work, serving as a part-time office assistant. During her time in the program, she worked diligently to build her professional and soft skills, gaining valuable experience and confidence.
Her dedication paid off. Ms. Lewis soon secured a full-time position as a restaurant manager at Condado’s, a significant step forward in her career journey.
Driven by a clear vision for her future and a strong desire to provide for her family, Ms. Lewis continues to move forward with purpose. Her story is a powerful example of how the right support, combined with personal determination, can lead to lasting success.
